Q1]. What is air compressor / defined air compressor ?
- Air compressor is a machine which sucks low pressure low temperature air from atmosphere and compress it to high pressure high temperature by reciprocating motion of piston or by rotary motion of blade in casing .
- it is work absorbing machine driven by external source. There are many industrial uses of this compressed air.

- for spray painting in Paint industry.
- in vehicle to operate air brake.
- in automobile service station to clean vehicles.

-Air compressor mainly classified into two groups. 
1. Reciprocating air compressor ( positive displacement) .
2. Rotary air compressor. 
 
Classification of reciprocating compressor 
1.single state
   a)  single acting 
   b) Double acting 
2. Multi state 
    a) single acting 
    b)  Double acting. 

Classification of Rotary air compressor. 
1. positive displacement 
    a). Root blowers. 
    b). Vane type. 
    c). Lysholm. 
     d). Screw type. 

2. Non-positive displacement 
     a).  Centrifugal or radial flow. 
     b).  Axial flow. 

Q4].Reciprocating air compressor.
These are called positive displacement compressor,because it displaced a fixed amount of fluid. 
  example a transparent discharge of air.

Q5].Single acting compressor.
-Single acting reciprocating compressor are always vertical.
-The piston is directly driven by connecting rod and crankshaft enclosed in a crankcase which is high pressure tight. 
-There is only one delivery for high pressure air for every revolution of crankshaft. 
-It require less floor space for their installation.

Q6]. Double acting reciprocating compressor.
- double acting compressor are always horizontal. 
-Two deliveries from both sides of the Piston for each revolution of crankshaft.
- This compressor require more space as compared to single acting vertical compressor. 
-As both the side of the Piston are exposed to Rapid change in temperature and pressure. There is a chance of leakage considerable large stuffing box is used to prevent the leakage.
